In the first season, over fifty acres were seeded and most of the brushing had been done to the wooded areas, even though during that first fall the weather was extremely inclement.
The second year of operation saw a remarkable amount of growth. All of the greens and fairways were seeded and were expected to be playable in 1959. Most of the trees that are on the course today were planted during 1958. The second year also saw the development of an outdoor barbecue area complete with swings, sandbox and horseshoe pitch. Temporary swimming facilities were provided as well as a ski run, which was cut on a hill located near the clubhouse. At that time the clubhouse consisted of an old farmhouse, which was on the club property.
The fairways were cut for the first time on June 2, 1958, and the first 9 holes were opened to play on August 23, 1958.
In 1959, all 18 holes were opened for play, even though some of the fairways were not in the most desirable condition. Construction of the new clubhouse was started and that building was completed in early 1960.
Since those simpler times of mowing, watering, seeding and fertilizing by hand we have moved to an age of amazing equipment including satellite driven irrigation system. Windermere has survived these growing pains.
As Mr. Robinson suggested in 1957 Windermere Golf and Country Club has become one of the premier clubs in the Edmonton area, and a challenging golf course for members and guests.
The vision and hard work of board members, past and present, and the commitment of members and management of Windermere Golf and Country Club moved us to the exciting revitalization of the Windermere Golf and Country Club. |
