The Windermere Golf & Country Club was incorporated on July 5, 1957. The first Directors were President Alex Olynyk, G. Edward Trott and W. J. Martenson. They in turn selected Mr. C. E. Robinson to be the golf course architect. Mr. Robinson was quite enthusiastic about the location which the club had chosen for its intended golf course and the first board of directors looked forward with confidence to Windermere becoming one of the premier golf clubs in the Edmonton area.

In the first season, over fifty acres were seeded to grass and most of the brushing had been done to wooded areas, even though during that first fall the weather was extremely inclement.

Before the end of the first year, the Club had over 250 shareholders who had subscribed for shares, selling at the time between $250 and $300.

The second year of operation saw a remarkable amount of growth. All of the greens and fairways were seeded and were expected to be playable in 1959. Most of the trees that are on the course today were planted during 1958. The second year also saw the development of an outdoor barbecue area complete with swings, sandbox and horseshoe pitch. Temporary swimming facilities were provided as well as a ski run which was cut near the hill by the clubhouse. At that time the clubhouse consisted of an old farm house which was on the club property.

The fairways were cut for the first time on June 2, 1958 and the first 9 holes were opend to play on August 23, 1958.

In 1959, all 18 holes were opened for play, even though some of the fairways were not in the most desirable condition. Construction of the new clubhouse was started and that building was completed in early 1960. Unfortunately, the building had a short life span, as it burned to the ground on April 25, 1964. Ironically, this disaster occured after what was then known as the "men's night opening smoker".

After surviving some temporary clubhouse premises, which also produced some of the most active folklore in the club's history, the new clubhouse was opened in the Spring of 1979. Further improvements were carried out in the 1995 and 1996 seasons.

Last spring the membership voted 62% in favour of proceeding with a Clubhouse Initiative. The survey by Read Jones Christofferson has been completed to determine whether it is structurally sound. The survey can be viewed by members on the member area along with the Executive Committee recommendation.

From its beginnings in 1957, the club has become one of the premier clubs in the Edmonton area and a challenging golf course for members and guests. The club now has 466 shareholders.
